Episode 1 – I Have Called You By Name

In Capernaum, Mary Magdalene, going by the name “Lilith”, wrestles with real demons. While Nicodemus is touring the region, Praetor Quintus approaches him demanding help collecting unpaid taxes. Matthew deals with the turmoil of being considered a traitor by his fellow Jews. Simon and his brother Andrew struggle with their tax debts to Rome. At a centurion’s behest, Nicodemus goes to the Red Quarter to perform an exorcism on “Lilith” but fails, leaving him shaken. On tax day, Andrew is unable to pay, but Simon tells Matthew that he has an arrangement with Quintus. The arrangement is to inform Quintus about his fellow Jews fishing on Shabbat. Andrew disapproves, considering it a betrayal. Following a suicide attempt, “Lilith” loses hope for her condition, until she encounters Jesus, who calls Mary Magdalene by name, healing and restoring her.

  1. Which character stood out to you the most? Which were most interesting? Most moving?
  2. What did you think about how enticing wealth was for Matthew and yet how hated he was for his willingness to work for Rome and extort his fellow Jews?
  3. What did you think about the timing of the appearance of Jesus? How does His intentionality help you recognize Him in your life?
  4. What were your impressions of Nicodemus and his helplessness before the demon-possessed Mary Magdalene?
  5. In what ways can you identify with Mary Magdalene?
  6. We are being shown each character’s “before Jesus” life. What does an encounter with Jesus do to people? How is your encounter with Jesus changing YOU?
  7. What parts of your “before” has God redeemed, and which are you most grateful for?
  8. How does “I have called you by name, you are mine” impact you today?
  9. Who is someone in your life who needs to “come and see” Jesus? Pray for that person, then go make the introduction. Trust Jesus to do the convincing.

Explore Deeper – Luke 8:1-3

  1. READ: One person will first read the scripture selection in the King James Version.
  2. RE-READ: Next, another person will read the same passages in a modern language or amplified version for more clarity such as the New Living Translation (NLT), Message Bible (MSG), New English Translation (NET), Amplified Bible (AMP), etc. We recommend using the YouVersion Bible app.
  3. RETELL: One person will begin retelling the scripture passage in their own words (a new person to start each week is great!) Then as a group, work together to fill in gaps and build the story. This will help us internalize and own it. Be sure everyone participates.
  • What was Jesus’ mission in the cities he traveled through?
  • What would have been the purpose of visting multiple places instead of staying in one?
  • What kind of resources would have been needed on the journey to care for Jesus, the twelve, and the other disciples who followed?
  • How were the resources provided?
  • Of the three women mentioned, why might Mary’s healing be described in more detail?
  • What kind of “substance” or possessions would these women have had to share?
  • How might these women have acquired their resources?
  • What could have compelled them to follow and care for Jesus and his disciples?
  • In what ways have you repaid your gratitude to Jesus?
