Commitment to Family and Self

Pray

Pray together for the group meeting, and any pressing needs within the group.

Review

Each week you’ll spend some time reviewing the previous week’s lesson. Did anything happen last week that brought the lesson to mind, and what did you learn from it?

Watch

Watch the following discussion-starter video. It’ll set the topic of discussion for the group.

Proverbs 31 15-31
Ephesians 5:25-27

One person will first read the scripture selection in the King James Version. Next, another person will read the same passages in a modern language or amplified version for more clarity such as the New Living Translation (NLT), Message Bible (MSG), New English Translation (NET), Amplified Bible (AMP), etc. We recommend using the YouVersion Bible app.

Retell

  1. One person will begin retelling the scripture passage in their own words (a new person to start each week is great!) Then…
  2. As a group, work together to fill in gaps and build the story. This will help us internalize and own it. Be sure everyone participates.

Discuss

Together, share around the group how the topic and scripture setting applies to your life personally. Here are some thoughts to consider for discussion… don’t let the discussion stop here, though… what questions can you ask that will help uncover God’s message?

Scripture :

Proverbs 31 15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

 Diligence for the home

  1. Is this woman diligent? How can we tell?
  2. Is she industrious?
  3. Is she well regarded? Why? What is the attribute that she excels in?
  4. What is virtue?
  5. Do you think this woman was fulfilled?
  6. How is this woman clothed? If you met a woman who had strength and honor how would you recognize it?
  7. Why would a woman clothed in strength and honor rejoice in times to come?
  8. How does a woman who speaks with kindness and wisdom sound?
  9. What does it mean that she looks to the ways of her household?
  10. Would you say this woman is committed to her household or to herself?
  11. Can you be committed to being your best self and be selfish with your family?
  12. Can you be committed to your family if you neglect yourself?
  13. What ideas from Proverbs 31 could you apply to your commitment to your family?

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

  1. How did Jesus love the church and give himself for it? How can husbands do the same?
  2. Is the husband to act superior to his wife? Did Jesus act superior to his disciples? Or did he wash their feet?
  3. What is the purpose of Christs love for the church?
  4. If Christ loved the church to present it spotless and glorias what is the purpose of the mans commitment to his family? What is the goal?
  5. How can you show commitment to seeing your family spotless and gloriously living for God?
