Discussion 10 – Modesty

Pray

Pray together for the group meeting, and any pressing needs within the group.

Review

Each week you’ll spend some time reviewing the previous week’s lesson. Did anything happen last week that brought the lesson to mind, and what did you learn from it?

Watch

Watch the following discussion-starter video. It’ll set the topic of discussion for the group.

Read

For each section of verse below: One person will first read the scripture selection in the King James Version.

Re-read

Next, another person will read the same passages in a modern language or amplified version for more clarity such as the New Living Translation (NLT), Message Bible (MSG), New English Translation (NET), Amplified Bible (AMP), etc.

Retell

One person will begin retelling the scripture passage in their own words (a new person to start each week is great!) Then…

As a group, work together to fill in gaps and build knowledge towards understanding and wisdom. This will help us internalize and own it. Be sure everyone participates.

Modesty in Apparel

Luke 8:27, 33-35

27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.

33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. 34 When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

  • Why do you think being possessed with devils caused the man to live in the tombs naked?
  • What does the man’s nakedness signify?
  • How did the encounter with Jesus change the man’s life?
  • What was significant about the scripture mentioning that the man was fully clothed after his deliverance?
  • How did those who witnessed the man’s deliverance react?
  • What does their reaction say about their faith?

1 Timothy 2:9

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

  • What does modest apparel mean to you?
  • What is meant by shamefacedness and sobriety?
  • What is the significance of avoiding gold, pearls, broided hair, and costly array?
  • How does modest living affect our pursuit of holiness?

1 Peter 3:3-4

3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

  • Why is how we dress important in our pursuit of holiness?
  • How can we adorn our hearts so that they are pleasing to God?
  • What is the significance of this scripture mentioning that the hidden man of the heart is incorruptible?
  • What makes a meek and quiet spirit valuable to God?

Philippians 4:5

5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

  • What comes to mind when you read moderation in this scripture?
  • In what situation would it be difficult to let our “moderation be made known?”
  • How is other people’s perception of us connected to our pursuit of holiness?
  • How does knowing the Lord is “at hand” impact our pursuit of holiness?
