Family Focus
Pray
Pray together for the group meeting, and any pressing needs within the group.
Review
Each week you’ll spend some time reviewing the previous week’s lesson. Did anything happen last week that brought the lesson to mind, and what did you learn from it?
Watch
Watch the following discussion-starter video. It’ll set the topic of discussion for the group.
One person will first read the scripture selection in the King James Version.
Next, another person will read the same passages in a modern language or amplified version for more clarity such as the New Living Translation (NLT), Message Bible (MSG), New English Translation (NET), Amplified Bible (AMP), etc.
Retell
One person will begin retelling the scripture passage in their own words (a new person to start each week is great!) Then…
As a group, work together to fill in gaps and build knowledge towards understanding and wisdom. This will help us internalize and own it. Be sure everyone participates.
Mind and Soul
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Body
1 Timothy 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
- What is the primary responsibility of a parent to their child?
- How do you train a child? How consistent does training have to be to be called training?
- How do you know what to train a child in?
- Can you train a child to do something different from what they see you do?
- Can you train a child if the child is hungry or thirsty or cold or tired?
Not Alone
Ecclesiastes 4:6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.
7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
8 There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.
- Have you ever had plenty but still felt sad?
- Have you ever had nothing but someone to talk to and felt happy?
- What is vexation of spirit – what does it feel like?
- Why would a person by themselves feel like they are always working to have more? If there is just one of them wouldn’t that make the load easier?
- Why would two have good reward for their labor? What is synergy?
- Why is there safety in numbers?
- If having another around is important – why not just have them around when you need them?
- What can we do to be present for one another in a family? What should we focus on?
- If we focus on what the family needs spiritually, then who focuses on us?
