Go Fish Devotional - Week 8
Disciple Makers as Fishing Guides; everyone needs navigation8 Declarations for a Disciple Maker
Day 1: A Disciple Maker Is a Guide
Declaration #1: A disciple maker is a guide who leads the believer into a new and undiscovered life.
- Disciple-making was the culture during Jesus’ ministry.
- Jesus explicitly taught and modeled to the disciples how to make believers, and develop them into mature Christians.
- In the rabbi-discipleship world the rabbi’s invited their students’ into a mentoring relationship
Final Thoughts
A disciple maker guides a believer into a new area of life. The new area of life may begin with leading them to repentance, baptism or a life of greater devotion. However their culture was centered around not just leading someone to a new area of life, but passing this very trait onto them. As you lead someone into a more mature level of Christianity, remember, this isn’t leading them into deeper responsibility at the corporate worship center, but beginning to share their testimony with others relative to their stage. You are inviting someone into a relationship with a purpose, where you have developed the trust with them to speak into their life.
Biblical Devotion
2 Timothy 2:1-2 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, (2) and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Proverbs 27:17-19 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. (18) Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who guards his master will be honored. (19) As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man.
Psalms 71:15-24 My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. (16) With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. (17) O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. (18) So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. (19) Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like you? (20) You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. (21) You will increase my greatness and comfort me again. (22) I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praises to you with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel. (23) My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed. (24) And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long, for they have been put to shame and disappointed who sought to do me hurt.
1Thessalonians 2:8-13 So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us. (9) For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. (10) You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers. (11) For you know how, like a father with his children, (12) we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. (13) And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
Proverbs 9:8-12 Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. (9) Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. (10) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. (11) For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life. (12) If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it.
Hebrews 13:7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.
