Day 2: A disciple maker worth following

Declaration #2: A disciple maker must be someone worth following.

1. A disciple maker should be more mature than their followers, but they don’t need to have absolute Christian perfection.
2. The disciple maker only needs to be a step ahead of the follower.
3. The disciple maker encourages those they are mentoring to share their faith and testimony with friends even before they completely obey the gospel.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to be a perfect Christian to mentor someone. If you have repented, you can lead someone into repentance. If you have been baptized, you can mentor encourage someone to be baptized. If you have read through the entire Bible, you can lead someone to read through it as well. If you have taken a journey into deep prayer and fasting, you can mentor someone to have a spiritual breakthrough in their life. But key to all of this, is you are not just leading or mentoring someone for their sake, but for the sake of the individual that they will pour into.

Biblical Devotion

Colossians 2:1-3  For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face,  (2) that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ,  (3) in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Romans 15:14-16  I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another.  (15) But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God (16) to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:2-7  For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.  (3) And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, (4) and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,  (5) so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (6) Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.  (7) But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.

Colossians 1:9-10  And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,  (10) so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

Romans 12:1-3  I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  (2) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.  (3) For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

1 Corinthians 3:1-9  But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.  (2) I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, (3)  for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?  (4) For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human? (5) What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each.  (6) I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. (7) So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. (8) He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor.  (9) For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.
