Go Fish Devotional - Week 10
Fish Finders and Boat Sonar; the attitude of a disciple makerDay 1: Finding the Right Catch
There are many ways to find a fish. When it comes to disciple making, your attitude towards disciple making is the biggest determining factor in the fish you will find to disciple.
Jesus ministered to any and everyone with a need, but he was selective about those he called into ministry:
- Carefully chose disciples into ministerial relationship.
- Shared his vision with selected disciples.
- Put expectations on them.
- Released them to go and do the same with their disciples.
Final Thoughts
The most effective form of evangelism with long-term kingdom impacts is through building relationships. There are other methods of evangelism which have quick turnaround in attendance, but nothing is as powerful and longstanding as the relationship you build with someone.
Biblical Devotion
The following scriptures present a Godly attitude that will support our disciple making efforts.
Philippians 2:1-8 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, (2) complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. (3) Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. (4) Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. (5) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, (6) who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, (7) but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. (8) And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Psalms 51:15-17 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. (16) For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. (17) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Matthew 16:24-26 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. (25) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (26) For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
Proverbs 3:5-8 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. (6) In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. (7) Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. (8) It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.
